Justice, not Charity

"I believe that, as long as there is plenty, poverty is evil."

- Robert Kennedy

Last year in July, history was made.  For the first time, leaders of the G8 nations(the richest 8 countries in the world) made a set of unprecedented promises to help end proverty in Africa.  Finally, the leaders of the world listened to the cry of millions who campaigned for the Global Call to Action Against Proverty as well as the billions worldwide who watched the Live 8 concerts.  The cry was simple: Justice, not Charity. To make proverty history, people need to give more than their money, they need to lend their voice.

I don't need to give the exact statistics of what this kind of proverty looks like, simply understand that it's far worse than you will probably ever witness.  Tens of thousands die everyday from treatable diseases while tens of millions of children are denied basic schooling.  Countless lives face hopelessness everyday because they lack the basic necessities to live.

As we mark the anniversary of Live 8 and the G8 meeting, it's very sad to say that the promises made by our leaders were not kept.  Sure, some progress has been made. But to do what we set out to do, to be the generation that will make proverty history, much more needs to be done.  Here's a short summary of how the G8 did this past year.  I recommend everyone to read it, even if you don't think you're the kind to promote charity.  Again, it's not about giving money, it's about being just.  Justice is one of God's most important traits.  But as Christians, I don't see many of us care about justice.  Our churches are more about what God can do for us, not how God can work through us to help the needy, to promote and enforce His justice.

We need to do more, much more.  Here's one way.
